6 Reasons You Should Enter Talent Competitions
By Renee Grant-Williams
It really doesn’t matter whether you are a seasoned performer, ready to belt it out on American Idol, or are a hobby singer. Competitions can be educational and fun as long as you keep a good perspective on the process and don’t take them too seriously.
Local talent shows are a great place for beginners to dive in and learn the ins and outs of entertainment competitions. Competitions are a good way to practice controlling your nerves and get a feel for who you are as a singer. National television shows are based on ratings and the contestants are really there merely as entertainment.
Of course I’m very proud of my students who have had successful recording careers, but I’m equally proud of those who have made it to the gladiator-like competition rounds of these major television contests. Those who make it to the final rounds on the show are bound to get the attention of power players of the music industry. And they don’t even have to be the winner!
Five singers who have worked with me have appeared on the final rounds of American Idol including one first-place winner and two runners-up. Seven competed on The Voice and two on America’s Got Talent where one placed second. I’ve even had two runners-up in Australia and one runner-up in Italy. There is no guarantee as to what will follow but several of these students have had successful recording careers.

So, why should you consider entering these contests? Even if you don’t expect to win there’s no harm in giving it a shot. You just might surprise yourself. You really have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The only way you can lose is to not try.
What do you gain if you do compete?
1-Audition deadlines force you to focus.

3-Improve your auditioning skills.
4-It’s a great way to network.
