CAN YOU HACK IT AS A PERFORMING ARTIST?

Are you are looking for a professional career as a singer? By that I mean are you planning to support yourself and a family as a performing artist? If the answer is yes, are you sure you are up to the task?

I’m honored to be the “go to” vocal coach for Nashville superstar producer Paul Worley. Paul has produced artists like: Lady Antebellum, Dixie Chicks, Martina McBride, The Band Perry, Big and Rich, and many more.

Paul has a special program for his unseasoned singers. They must schedule, book and play 90 gigs in 99 days. That is a LOT of work.

So back to my question, are you sure you are up to the task? If you feel you are and you are serious about your singing career, then I challenge you to schedule, book and play 90 gigs in 99 days. Don’t you think this would be a great way to kick off 2017?

Before you begin this adventure you need to be sure you have all your ducks in a row. You need to have a workable website, a YouTube channel and a professional-looking CD you can send when requested.

If you must travel with a band or other singers be sure they will be able to accompany you. This might be best done as a solo act if possible. Remember, this is a way for you to see if you are able to “hack it as a performing artist.”

Here are a few suggestions to help get you started. Many won’t pay, but will give you experience you desperately need.

Nursing homes/Hospitals/ VA Hospitals
Birthday/wedding/anniversary/family reunions
(get with local party coordinators)
Mall concerts
Open mic nights at music venues
Local bars, restaurants, sandwich shops, pizza parlors
Opening act for other singers
Fairs/festivals/music festivals/craft shows
House concerts
College fraternities/sororities/high school dances
Grand Openings
Outdoor celebrations/July 4, Memorial Day
Cruise ships
Resorts
Corporation parties
Ball games
Marathons/charity walks
Wineries

A few other ideas:
Check the social media pages of other singers to see where they are performing. If you have a local following rent a venue and put on your own show, you could even collaborate with other singers. Facebook Live and Periscope are great on-line venues.

Keep in mind, these don’t have to be one-time gigs, there’s nothing wrong with re-booking several weeks or months later. Work your way into a permanent spot if you can.

Keep a calendar of events that you missed and contact those places about performing the following year.

Now go get ‘em!
