Meet, the man, the myth, the legend, Mr. John Taylor, entertainment director for Tootsie’s World Famous Orchid Lounge. John has got to be the busiest man in the music industry. Singers come from all over the country to audition to perform at one of the many honky tonks and clubs managed by John. It’s estimated that he receives between 500 and 1000 emails each week from hopeful singers and auditions as many as 30-40 singers a week, and that’s just for a single spot.
John is also personally involved in helping his singers make good decisions in their careers. He makes it a priority to lead them away from the sharks of the business and point them in the right direction. He’s very free with his vast wisdom when dealing with young singers.
John and I spoke about two weeks ago about my presenting a private vocal clinic for 50 of his singers at Tootsies, Rippy’s and Honky Tonk Central. Not one to pass up on a chance to get in front of a of “captive audience” of singers I was more than happy to do it.
I chose high notes as my main topic, but as soon I got singers up on the stage they began telling me what they felt their biggest issue was. The class quickly went though high notes, resonance and consonants.
I really enjoyed teaching the clinic at Tootsies and it was a great way for the singers to learn by watching my techniques work on another singers. If you think you are good enough and want to try out to sing at Tootsie’s or one of John’s other clubs you can contact him through their website.

I’d love to know what you think, did you enjoy this video? Next week, John is going to share with us the history of Tootsie’s and what’s known as “lower Broadway.” I live here and was fascinated with his story, stay tuned.
